Grant Writer FAQs: What Every Nonprofit Should Know

Premio Services Grant Writing Tree

At Premio, we often hear the same questions from professionals in and outside the nonprofit sector. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about working with a grant pro, plus insight into what makes our services a smart investment.

Do grant writers get paid a percentage of what they win?
The Grant Professionals Association Code of Ethics prohibits percentage-based fees. (Some government grants are structured to compensate the grant administrator at the close of the grant. These are the exceptions.) We charge via flat rates or monthly retainers. When you hire a grant consultant, you’re not just paying for a single document, you’re investing in a strategic partner providing assets that can be reused, refined, and repurposed to support your mission for years to come.

Can you write grants pro bono?
Grant writing is a highly specialized skill that requires research, analysis, and strategy. Like your organization, we love helping causes that matter and are committed to sustainability and value-based work.

Why are the right grants so hard to find?
Not all funding is created equal. The best grants are those that align with your mission, capacity, and goals. We use professional research tools and cross-reference hundreds of opportunities to identify funders that are the right match for you. This saves you time and helps avoid the frustration and wasted resources of applying for grants that aren’t a good fit.

Can you guarantee funding?
Unfortunately, no one can guarantee funding. Even a strong application may not be awarded due to shifting funder priorities, limited dollars, or the need to build trust over time. Many funders don’t award grants the first time around, but consistent, strategic engagement can lead to success. We are mindful about taking a relationship versus transactional approach to funders.

How soon can you get grants?
The grant lifecycle typically ranges from 12 to 18 months, depending on the funder. Being “grant-ready” is critical to getting awarded; your organization needs solid financials, clear program plans, and internal capacity to deliver on what you propose. Our Grant Readiness service helps ensure you’re set up for success before you even research, let alone start submitting grants.

What’s the ROI of working with a grant consultant?
Our success rate for grant submissions is typically around 95 percent, however, clients gain far more than just awards won. Working with us gets you rich research, sound strategies, and high quality writing that can support donor outreach, marketing, and future proposals. Our work together will give your organization a stronger foundation and a compelling case to attract more funding. Don’t just take it from us. Read our testimonials.
